Grief and attachment are both universal experiences, unavoidable in some form or another for all people. Rather than take an ecological system perspective, researchers have sought to understand each divergent concept primarily individually through quantitative and mixed methodologies. Consequently, although each study in grief, adult attachment, and grief/attachment has contributed to the discovery of knowledge, countless questions remain. Therefore, the purpose of this study has been to use a basic interpretive qualitative design to explore how adult males and females, ages 24 and older, perceive the interrelationship between their grief and attachment experiences prior to and following the death of a partner. Data analysis occurred through the use of constant comparative analysis. Findings indicated that an interrelationship may, in fact, exist between grief and attachment. The outcome of the interrelationship between the participants' attachment styles and their grief appeared to be a consistent pattern of life changes. Thus, undesired change appears to be at least one of the connecting factors in the interrelationship between the participants' attachment patterns prior to the death of their partners, their grief process, and their attachment patterns following the death of their partners. How an individual copes with changes within the ecological systems appears to have a profound impact on both adult attachment and grief. Therefore, it becomes necessary to approach grief from an attachment disruption perspective and address how one copes with the undesired changes. In short, the findings indicated that the undesired change resulting from the attachment disruption, and consequently, how the bereaved cope, are two links to the interrelationship between adult attachment and grief prior to and following the death of a partner.
